Otočac and the Gacka River
Otočac – the center of the ancient Croatian province of Gacka
And while the Gacka River seduces you with its beauty, it certainly doesn't occur to you that you are in the immediate vicinity of the oldest settlement with a Croatian population. The proof comes from the inscription on the Baška Tablet from 1100, and you can find other evidence in the town of Otočac itself in the local museum.

The water from the river is drinkable (the second best in Europe), the indigenous brown trout is the most sought-after river fish, the aquatic plants of the Gacka River were once mowed for livestock, and at the springs (in Sinac – Tonković and Majerevo vrilo) and waterfalls (in Švica) there have been restored mills for grinding grain and benches for washing and "softening" domestic woolen textiles, as well as baskets for rolling and washing woolen blankets.
