Some information about Smokvica and the island of Korčula:
This small municipality has a population of just over 1,000 inhabitants and can be reached via the island road (it is only 29 km from the town of Korčula). The settlement is built on the southern slope of a hill next to large, spacious vineyard fields where the Pošip grape variety is cultivated. There is a modern winery for the production and bottling of the famous wine of the same name.
The large Neo-Romanesque church of Our Lady of Purification was built in 1920 according to the designs of O. Iveković on the site of an older church. Next to it is a Baroque loggia surrounded on all sides by columns. The village once hosted several nobleman’s manor houses (Ijetnikovac castles), and nearby there are several modest early-medieval churches. The cultural and artistic society Ante Cefera operates in the village, nurturing music and the local folklore Kumpanija.
Following the hillside road southwards, you reach two coves covered with pine trees; in the larger Brna there is a hotel, a number of newly built small guesthouses and holiday houses, and in the neighboring Istruga there is healing mud used for treating rheumatic ailments. Continuing the road along the southern coast to the west, you pass the tourist-apartment settlement Prišćapac with beautiful beaches, then the coves Prižba and Gršćica where, besides a hotel in the pine forest, there are numerous family guesthouses and houses. From here, the road ascends northwards into the island’s interior towards the large town of Blato.
