PEROJ is located on the southwest coast of southern Istria, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. Peroj is a prehistoric settlement that was already a famous summer resort PRAETORIOLUM or CASALE PETRIOLO in Roman times, which is evident from the conclusions of the Assembly of Riga from 804.
After the plague that hit this area in 1561, persistent initiatives of the Venetian provincial governors led to re-settlement in the period from 1578 to 1657, when 13 Greek-Orthodox families from Montenegro were enthroned here, from which the current residents come. The historic center of the town consists of several simple stone houses.
The coast of Peroj, made of limestone rocks that descend to the sea, interspersed with pebble beaches, stretches all the way to Portić and Marić bays, a harbor that for centuries was the port of Vodnjan through which trade was carried out with Venice and other places on the Adriatic.
Today PEROJ has 830 inhabitants, mostly peasants and fishermen. The place is being strongly and continuously urbanized and is aimed at the development of tourism, offering a large number of accommodation capacities in private houses and villas built in the entire area up to Barbariga, where a large tourist village with 1400 apartments has been built.
