Trsat, with the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Franciscan monastery, is the oldest Marian sanctuary in Croatia. The first settlement, Tarsatica, a fortified town, was located on the site of today's Old Town, as an important defensive Roman stronghold in the 4th century, destroyed in 799 by the Franks in a battle with the Croats, during which Margrave Erik also died on the slopes of the hill. The name itself could be from the Celtic name Tarsa, meaning 'hill by the river'. On the site of the former Tarsatica, in the 13th century, the town of Reka (today's Rijeka) developed with towers, shops and streets, which would belong to the Habsburgs from 1466 with minor interruptions until 1918. Today's Trsat extends from the old town of Trsat (Gradina) to the former barracks (today's university campus) and to Strmica to the north. Due to its location and proximity to all amenities, this neighborhood is considered one of the most sought-after in the city.
