In the Middle Ages, Žminj was under the rule of the Pazin Principality, which means that it belonged to the Habsburgs, while most of Istria was under the Venetians. Because of this, Žminj was a border town between two large political systems for centuries, which strongly influenced its development, defense and everyday life.
