Senj is the oldest city in the upper Adriatic, and was founded in pre-Roman times some 3000 years ago (Senia). It was the main center of the Illyrian tribe Japoda. The current settlement is located at the foot of the slopes of Kapela and Velebit. The symbol of the city, Nehaj Fortress, also known as "Nehaj Tower", is located on the Trbušnjak hill, often called Nehaj, and was completed in 1558 and has been the seat of Uskok ever since. It is the largest urban agglomeration on the Croatian coast between Rijeka and Zadar. The city area encompasses a coastline of 76 km, and is located between the sea, the slopes of Kapela and Velebit, the largest mountain in Croatia. Its location on the eastern coast of the Adriatic connects it by sea to the cities and countries of the Mediterranean.
