Sušak (in the narrow sense - the area on the left bank of the Rječina) has been uninhabited for a long time and is descriptively called 'oltre la Fiumara', alla riva tersattana di Fiumara', 'trans pontem, sottoTersatto' or 'San Lorenzo' (after the chapel) by the people of Rijeka and in Croatian via Rečina, SV. Lovreč.
The name Sussach is first mentioned in a document dated 14. IV. 1822 for the area from Marganovo to Pećine and to the north. to the old road to Trsat (as the property of the Trsat Franciscan convent).[2] The story that Sušak got its name because the women of Fiumar used to dry their clothes there is part of folk etymology, because the laundry was on Školjić (Scoglieto) where there was enough space for drying clothes, and it would have been absurd to go by ferry, and later by bridge across the border to dry clothes. Mr. Kobler is probably right when he assumes that it was the name for a dry area created by filling a large area, the entire neighborhood from the Continental Hotel to today's Mrtvi Kanal (later Delta) and to Brajdica in the east is on filled terrain (among other things, from all the construction waste after the devastating earthquake in Rijeka in 1750, which was filled here). Today's Brajdica was cultivated at the beginning of the 19th century and was then called Brajda. In 1855, a new riverbed of the Rječina was broken through this dam and the Delta was created.
