Valtura is a small town in Istria located in the municipality of Ližnjan, just a few kilometers from Pula. It is best known for its proximity to the archaeological site of Nezakcij, the capital of the Illyrian people of the Histria. Nearby is Šandalja, a system of several caves, named after the quarry of the same name. Stone was exploited at this site as early as Roman times.
The Šandalja I and II caves, located ten meters apart, have been explored to date. The remains of Homo erectus incisors, which are one million years old, were found there. This data speaks of the oldest prehistoric man in Europe. Likewise, the oldest percussion tool in Europe (a flint hammer) was also found at this site.
