The historic core (declared a cultural monument in 1968) is divided into two parts: the older, upper, so-called "Grad" in which a settlement surrounded by city walls developed, and the lower part consisting of the areas "Zagrad" and "Primorje". The climate is Mediterranean, so the architecture corresponds to the Mediterranean type of construction with many winding, narrow, steep and stepped streets and small squares. The Jadranska magistrala passes right above the city, and to the northwest, about 15 km away, lies the city of Rijeka.
