Senj is the oldest city in the upper Adriatic, and was founded in pre-Roman times some 3000 years ago (Senia). It was the main center of the Illyrian tribe of Japoda. The current settlement is located at the foot of the slopes of Kapela and Velebit. The symbol of the city, the Nehaj Fortress, also known as "Nehaj Tower", is located on the Trbušnjak hill, often called Nehaj, was completed in 1558 and has been the headquarters of Uskok since then. The city area encompasses a coastline of 76 km, and is located between the sea, the slopes of Kapela and Velebit, the largest mountain in Croatia. Its location on the eastern Adriatic coast connects it to the cities and countries of the Mediterranean by sea.
