Some count it among the seven Liburnian fortresses (septem turres) of Roman Liburnia, which testifies to its being considered an old town. The old town of Hreljin was located in the area of today's Gradina. It was surrounded by walls with two towers, and had two entrances. At the northwestern and southwestern ends stood one defensive tower with a circular ground plan. The tower facing the Bakar Bay enclosed a small castle with a defensive wall and a smaller rectangular tower, probably the oldest part of the fortified settlement. At the highest point of the hill was a fortress, the remains of which are still well preserved today.
