TRSAT is, with the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Franciscan monastery, the oldest Marian sanctuary in Croatia. The first settlement, Tarsatica, a fortified town, was located on the site of today's Old Town, as an important defensive Roman stronghold in the 4th century, destroyed in 799 by the Franks in a battle with the Croats, during which Margrave Erik also died on the slopes of the hill. The name itself could be from the Celtic name Tarsa, meaning 'hill by the river'.
